Art Psychotherapy

Art Psychotherapy is an internationally recognize and evidence based form of psychological treatment that combines psychology/psychotherapy with the creative process of art making to allow clients to express feelings that are often difficult to express in words. It is suited for anyone–men, women, children–and all ages with psycho-social problems and / or psychiatric disorders.

The aim of Art Psychotherapy is to bring about change, development, stabilization and / or acceptance. There is a concrete work process and end result, in which the client gains insight during every session.

Hello, Bonjour! I am CBHN’s Founder as well as your in house Art Psychotherapist, or as I prefer to say, ‘I use art to help children heal’. As someone who was uprooted at the tender age of 9 from her village in Burkina Faso (West Africa) and later grew up around the world with her Dutch father and Canadian-German stepmother with her own youth challenges, I know first hand third cultural issues as well as how beneficial it would have been to have had such a service to help me navigate my youth. Furthermore, I have dedicated most of my life (thus far) to studying the use of art for children’s mental and physical healing.

Educationally I obtained my BA in Psychology/Art Therapy (Magna Cum Laude) from the College of Santa Fe (New Mexico, USA) in 2009 and MA in Art Therapy (Cum Laude) from New York University (New York, USA) in 2013. My practicum was at an in-and-outpatient psychiatric center and at a day treatment center for disadvantaged children with developmental delays-both completed in New York City; the latter became my focus and has led me to work in various clinical and non-clinical settings in the US, France, Sierra Leone, The Philippines and now the Netherlands.  Ontop of my degrees, I possess two certificates: one in treating children and adolescents with trauma through play, and another in Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Tapping: EvidenceBased, MindBody Treatment Approach to Anxiety Spectrum Disorders.

Professionally, I am registered with the American Art Therapy Association (AATA Art Therapy Credentials Board #15-001) and the Dutch Federatie Vaktherapeutische Beroepen (NVBT/FVB/Vaktherapie #109815).

While I can treat anyone, I specialise in treating children with special needs, specifically children with ADHD, anger management issues, and those on the autism spectrum (PDD-NOS).

My approach is psychodynamically and play oriented. In the former, I believe that there are psychological forces that underlie a child’s behavior, feelings and emotions and that they might be related to a child’s early experiences. And in the latter, I use play (ie. common boy and girl toys) to gather more information on a specific issue.

I compliment all of the above using a wide range of art medias ranging from painting, collage to clay and 3D sculpture, as well as meditation, mindfulness and very basic yoga exercises.

I can give sessions individually, in a group setting, with siblings as well as with a parent and a child (also called a ‘parent-child dyad’).
